developed for the SCCA CanAm racing series

The all-aluminum ZL1 427 engine, estimated at 550 horsepower, was developed for the SCAA CanAm racing series. Performance-oriented Chevrolet dealer Fred Gibb, however, knew a ZL1-equipped Camaro would do well on the dragstrips and turned to Chevrolet engineering executive Vince Piggins to make the Camaro/ZL1 combination available through the “COPO” ordering system. Gibb ordered 50 ZL1 Camaros to homologate the cars for the NHRA; 19 more were eventually ordered by other dealers. The ZL1 engine added a whopping $4,100 to the price of a Camaro, making the care marketable to only the most dedicated racers and enthusiasts.

This LeMans Blue car has 4.10 Posi-Traction differential and Muncie 4-speed transmission. Under the hood is a warranty replacement ZL1 engine. The original engine was kept by GM and, amazingly, located many years ago. It has been kept with the car ever since.
